Over a decade ago, longing to own a tiny chunk of our amazing planet, we purchased 4.7 acres of unimproved land located less than 100 miles from the geographic center of what would become the state of Texas in 1845. While exploring the property, we discovered a hackberry tree that had recently split in two and fallen to the ground. From that moment on, the property became known as SplitTree.
Over the years, we have cleared off a quarter-acre of prickly pear, added electrical power, hundreds of feet of fence, built a cover and deck for our RV (the Lake House), built an outdoor shower, constructed a free-standing pavilion, added 13 birdhouses and 2 feeding stations, all while leaving 90% of the property in its natural state. Later, we added a stone fire pit to inspire late-night conversations, and have hosted 11 annual SplitTree barbecues.
The original plan for SplitTree was to have our own private park where we could take our RV on weekends and enjoy nature and the great outdoors without dealing with park reservations or holiday crowds. But SplitTree has been much more. After the untimely passing of a dear friend, we realized how short life can be. SplitTree has become a special place where we spend time with family and friends in the outdoors, play games, eat delicious food, enjoy drinks, talk about old and new times, share our love for each other, and appreciate the important things in life.
